La soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Honeywell annonce avoir \u00e9labor\u00e9 le \u00ab meilleur \u00bb calculateur bas\u00e9 sur la physique quantique. Selon elle, “avec un volume quantique de 64, l’ordinateur quantique Honeywell est deux fois plus puissant que la meilleure solution existante jusqu’ici”<\/em>. En l\u2019occurrence, l\u2019ordinateur quantique Raleigh d\u2019IBM qui a atteint un volume quantique de 32 d\u00e9but 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Image<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

La machine se trouve dans un immense hangar s\u00e9curis\u00e9 situ\u00e9 dans le Colorado. Elle prend la forme d\u2019une chambre en acier inoxydable “de la taille d’un ballon de basket”<\/em>. Son refroidissement est assur\u00e9e par de l\u2019h\u00e9lium liquide \u00e0 une valeur proche de celle du z\u00e9ro absolu (\u2212273,15 \u00b0C), temp\u00e9rature \u00e0 laquelle les atomes cessent de vibrer. Dans cette chambre, les atomes flottent au-dessus d’une puce informatique et sont cibl\u00e9s par des lasers afin d\u2019effectuer des calculs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Informatique quantique : plus rapide, mais pas toujours\u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environ 10 000 dollars l\u2019heure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Honeywell travaille sur son supercalculateur quantique depuis une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es. Il mobilise une \u00e9quipe de plus de 100 personnes. Honeywell va d\u00e9sormais louer sa machine \u00e0 des entreprises. Le co\u00fbt estim\u00e9 pour une heure : environ 10 000 dollars. En outre, la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 collabore avec Microsoft Azure pour d\u00e9velopper des algorithmes quantiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darius Adamczyk, PDG d’Honeywell, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 : “L’informatique quantique nous permettra de relever des d\u00e9fis scientifiques et commerciaux complexes, entra\u00eenant des am\u00e9liorations radicales de la puissance de calcul, des co\u00fbts d’exploitation et de la vitesse”<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le volume quantique<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Par ailleurs, vous constatez que dans sa publication, Honeywell parle de volume quantique et non simplement de quBits. Pour d\u00e9finir cette notion, il faut rappeler quelques principes. Dans l\u2019informatique “analogico-num\u00e9rique”, les informations manipul\u00e9es par le processeur sont cod\u00e9es en binaires (0 et 1). C\u2019est la m\u00eame chose dans un ordinateur quantique. \u00c0 une exception majeure pr\u00e8s\u00a0: celui-ci utilise les lois de la physique quantique, \u00e0 savoir celles dites de superposition et d\u2019intrication. Les quBits superposent simultan\u00e9ment les deux \u00e9tats (0 et 1) comme peuvent l\u2019\u00eatre le spin et l\u2019\u00e9lectron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour se repr\u00e9senter ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne simplement, Bernard Ourghanlian, directeur technique de Microsoft, expliquait en 2018 le principe de fonctionnement d\u2019un supercalculateur quantique ainsi : “Quand on entre dans un labyrinthe, on a des dizaines et des dizaines de chemins possibles. Ce que fait un ordinateur traditionnel, c\u2019est qu\u2019il les explore un \u00e0 un. Cela va prendre un certain temps, m\u00eame s\u2019il est dot\u00e9 de plusieurs processeurs, car chacun des processeurs ex\u00e9cute le m\u00eame algorithme en parall\u00e8le. Avec un ordinateur quantique, la grande diff\u00e9rence, c\u2019est qu\u2019on est capable d\u2019explorer tous les chemins en m\u00eame temps. On va \u00e9videmment aller beaucoup plus vite”.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La notion de volume quantique, imagin\u00e9e par IBM, s\u2019appuie sur la quantit\u00e9 de qubits mais l\u2019associe au nombre de portes quantiques qui peuvent \u00eatre ex\u00e9cut\u00e9es cons\u00e9cutivement sans entrainer d’erreurs pr\u00e9judiciables \u00e0 la pr\u00e9cision des calculs. Ainsi, cette mesure est cens\u00e9e \u00eatre plus repr\u00e9sentative que la simple mention du nombre de qubits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
